What is Motion Capture?

Motion Capturing is used to evaluate the ergonomics of different course of motions, in character animation to make the figures behave plausible and in VR applications with a head-mounted display to visualize the users body a.s.o.

The ART motion capturing system uses rigid 6d targets which are attached to the body. We don't use a body suit. The markers are passive, so there is no need for batteries. In standard setups we use up to 19 targets for full body motion capturing. In seat box setups we can also use just a subset of targets to track only the upper body. Up to two people can be full-body-tracked simultaneously. A third subject’s upper body is also trackable at the same time.

ART provides an easy way to calibrate human model. With this model it is for example easy to do visualization in head-mounted VR applications, as we care for correct bone length of the individual users. The calibration is an easy and short online process with reasonable accuracy. We use the ART-Human software to add another output channel to the DTrack2 output. The 6dj (j like joints) is an easy human stick figure, which can be used for visualization purposes.

Available Plugins

Delmia V5™ R18 plugin

Our partner Haption developed RTID Human “Real-Time Interaction for Delmia Human”, an add-on software to Delmia V5™ R18. It enables interactive real-time simulation with digital human capabilities inside a virtual environment.

Using RTI for Delmia, the user can simulate manual operation for:

  • Accessibility testing
  • Visibility study
  • Ergonomic study
  • Workplace simulation
  • Manual handling

The user benefits include reduction of the time needed for producing human movement, increased productivity, increased quality, lower development effort and more.

Maya® & MotionBuilder® plugins

The Fraunhofer IAIS has developed two software plugins in order to use tracking data provided by ART systems in Autodesk® programs: MadTrack for Maya® 8 and ModTrack for MotionBuilder® 7 and 7.5.

Siemens Jack plugin

We also provide an interface to Jack and Process Simulate Human. Using our MotionViewer software, we can calibrate a human stick model by measuring the individual bone lengths of the subject. These values then undergo a short calibration process, in which the subject just moves inside the tracking volume.
The realtime tracking data is then sent to Jack using their standard motion capturing TCP interface.

MotionViewer Software

ART MotionViewer

This software is used to calibrate our human stick model and to transfer this human model to different 3rd party software. Currently we provide both our own transfer protocol and the Siemens Jack transfer protocol.
